Buyer Beware: Creative Lending is Making a Comeback by Lee McKnight

As the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau website says, "A 30-year fixed-rate loan is a good choice for many people, but it’s not the only kind of loan available." It's true; not everyone needs or wants the same type of mortgage. AND, there is a big difference between getting creative with financing (to make the most of what you have) and magical (read: riskier) thinking when selecting a mortgage.

When borrowing money gets more expensive, lenders get creative. But unfortunately, not all lending tools are straightforward, and some lead to less-than-ideal mortgage surprises (hello, adjustable-rate mortgages). So if you are shopping for a mortgage and hearing terminology you don't fully understand or rates that sound too good to be true, please don't hesitate to reach out and ask us questions>>

DIY Alert: You Can Clean Your Own AC by Lee McKnight

We know it's hard to imagine that the atmospheric river will ever stop dumping water from the sky, but at some point, it will not only be summer, but it will also feel like summer. Before we knew words like "heat dome," summer temperatures ticked upward, and air conditioning (central and window units) became more common in Portland homes.

Here is an incredibly accessible tutorial on air conditioner maintenance. Don't be daunted by the thirty-minute run-time! All the information is handy, and there are plenty of visual guides and demonstrations.

If your AC unit is hard-to-reach, or you do not DIY, and you're looking for a professional, let us know if you need a recommendation.

Portland's 2022 Drinking Water Report is IN by Lee McKnight

Is there anything more important than water? Not really. And yet many of us don't know much about the water we drink and use daily from the taps in our homes. We are fortunate in Portland to have access to drinking water from a nearby source (the Bull Run Watershed) thoughtfully managed by our municipal government.

The city monitors this precious resource closely and shares its data annually in a tidy report, including helpful FAQs about water quality.

RMLS Market Action Report by Lee McKnight

After an agonizing seven months of a market where months of inventory was under one month, we finally got back into the single digits with one month of inventory. The number of listings went up 4.6% from last month, and we could feel it. As the month progressed, sales slowed, but we will not see that until June's report (which comes out in mid-July). Meanwhile, it is almost unfathomable to believe that the Regional Multiple Listing System (the database we use to share listings) has over $1 Billion worth of active listings in the Portland Metro area alone. If sales slow like they look to be doing, that will have a ripple effect throughout several associated industries.

What's Past Is Prologue by Lee McKnight

We like to keep a tight focus on real estate in the Real News, but sometimes (and now is one of those times), there is an elephant so enormous among us that we are moved to expand our editorial boundaries. You may be wondering which elephant we're talking about as we are besieged by elephants lately–gun violence, anti-trans and anti-LGBTQ bills, and the potential reversal of Roe, to name just a few. Though all are worthy of our attention, the January 6 hearings feel paramount and elemental to the fabric of our democracy.

America is an idea. That's it. That's all it is. An idea. Set down on parchment. Enacted by once esteemed white, wealthy, entitled men. Privileged by education, the right to own property, enslave people, lead our military, and form our government. Once esteemed but no longer, this is the genius of the constitution. The idea itself. The belief in self-governance by the people, of the people, for the people.

We are those people. The citizen participants upon whose shoulders the protection of our yet fledgling experiment in democracy rests. Our belief in which led to the defeat of King George, our independence, the election of Abraham Lincoln in light of the 13th amendment, passage of the 14th, 15th, and 19th amendments, and the Voting and Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1965. In 1973 we impeached Richard Nixon, leading to the passage of the War Powers Act, the Election Campaign Act, and the Freedom of Information Acts of 1973 and 1974. All of which expanded democracy in response to the same anti-democratic forces that persist today.

If we still believe in the American Experiment of self-governance, the only answer is participation. Watch and listen to the hearings, read the transcripts, talk to each other, read the opinion pages, seek out alternative points of view, and most importantly, reference history because if the past is the prologue, this might be our future.
