Organizations Supporting People of Color in Portland

This month we wanted to shine a light on three organizations who are and have been doing incredible work to support people and communities of color in Portland.

Black Parent Initiative was founded in 2006 to engage black parents in discussions about education reform in our community. Today, the organization provides support to low and moderate-income parents as a vehicle for enhancing the lives of black youth. Their shift in focus is grounded in research that shows that one of the most powerful contributors to the success of children is the presence of engaged, stable parents. Learn more about & support Black Parent Initiative>>

Self-Enhancement, Inc. began as a one-week basketball camp for North Portland teens in 1981. The organization has flourished over it's near forty-year history to provide services to over 16,000 students and families annually. Students receive individualized support to help them meet academic and social goals from 6th or 9th grade through college. SEI connects families with the resources they need–housing, energy, or food assistance–to thrive in our community. Learn more about & support Self-Enhancement, Inc.>>

Brown Hope was founded in 2018 by a group of Black, Brown, and Indigenous Portlanders who are committed to racial justice in Oregon. With initiatives like Reparations Power Hour and Blackstreet Bakery, their focus is on highlighting diverse cultural experiences, connecting historically oppressed people, and facilitating anti-oppression educational opportunities. Learn more about & support Brown Hope>>
